The Sideboard is part of a collection designed by AVDW, called Transfurniture. A series of furniture pieces that brings back product design to functionality and usability, lost over the past years in due to “limited edition” trend. The sideboard itself uses no glue or screws, but it is still a robust container, thanks to the industrial belt and clamp that keeps it together. To be used in any kind of ambient, either modern or classic. The project takes care as well of the transportation issue. In fact, all products of the Transfurniture series can be easily stackable during transport and are easy to assemble. Last but not least, the “hand-made” works are almost none in the working process, so the sideboard is a very industrial piece.

The Spiro chair design utilizes the controlled precision of modern technology and materials without being defined by them. The main form of the chair is constructed in Corian – a material that can be milled flat and heat formed, whilst ensuring minimal loss of detail from complex patterns or waste of material through the manufacturing process. The legs are bent stainless steel and assembled by hand.
The engraved artwork is inspired by the parametric equation of the hypotrochoid (commonly known as the ‘spriograph’), but the manufacturing technique used to construct the body of the chair allows for maximum customization through CAM, to suite any environment.

The UNBEWEAVEABLE wingback chair is inspired by threshold living such as occurs in California and other similar climates; designed to sit happily in both indoor and outdoor environments. The form is informed by the Victorian wingback contemporized by a bent stainless frame. Hand knitted polypropylene rope reminiscent of a hammock is woven to the frame creating a suspended seat. The scale and privacy of this oversized wingback allows two people to entwine within, enveloped in the tactile gossamer surface.

The M Chaise is a multifunctional piece of furniture. Its inspiration is drawn from the declining etiquette of formal upright sitting in contemporary society.

The faceted nature of the M allows a person to sit, recline or lie in a multitude of positions and orientations and it allows multiple users to sit directly opposite each other. An internally hidden steel structure allows the 6” thick seat to span the 84” between the legs, giving the appearance that the chaise is hovering over the aluminum legs.

Mod-u-lar bend-a-lier for a diversity of spaces. The mod-u-lar bend-a-lier can grow into any desired size and shape like a tree.

The bend-a-lier is a chandelier that is made of modular laser cut metal arms that can be bent into any desired shape. There are 3 differents sets of arms, ones with sockets for fitting, plain, and a 3 armed one. If desired the mod-u-lar bend-a-liercan be hung without bending, and let gravity do the styling. The innovation of having special magnet-fitted crystals makes the application easier and provides for a random and wide varitey of applications. These features turn the chandelier into a very adaptable product since it can be altered according to mood or the desired effect.

As a lighting source we propose standard large clear globe lightbulbs or mirrored lightbulbs depending on the postion it is hung, fitted into porcelain fittings, since they are not only dimmable, but also emit beautiful light and bring out the full beauty of the bend-a-lier. The bend-a-lier comes in 2 sizes, the large one being 1000cm/100cm ad the small version is 50/50cm.

The concept "sliZed" came about one evening whilst i was sitting in my usual japanese dining haunt, making idil chit chat with the sushi chef we came onto a topic: the technique of slicing and how it is an art form. I then began researching sliced elements and visual cues in the urban and fashion environment, from zebra crossings, digital numbers to YSL latest "IT" heel, I became obsessed with lines and segments and the re-occurring black and white, white and black configuration. Black and white, white and black using a natural medium "wood" became the best use of hue and material to show visually the sliZed lines/forms/concept in an organic manner. Yet because all the pieces are individual each product/piece has the possibility to be custom coloured and custom sized: for example magenta sliZed lines with royal blue sections, the choice and imagination is completely up to the owner of sliZed.

With a view to the spread illumination there has been made use of a living flower with a hollow stalk, such as an Amaryllis. The use of a cylinder glass (acrylic plastic) in the foot makes the bottom waterproof.
Placing the hollow stalk over the lighting tube makes an illumination possible from within the stalk of the Amaryllis. The plant does not suffer from the light; it is able to grow according to a normal process via the water in the vase.

Full Circle is a multi-user design with a sweeping form that explores the space between two common chairs. A central mane bifurcates into a sensuous back support that re-embraces the overall form and consequently generates a flow between seat and bulbous base. Ren is sculpted from a single block of White Carrara marble and utilizes a combination of cutting-edge CNC milling technologies and exquisite hand crafting techniques. It denies the distinction between tabletop and base while homogenizing each component into a species that hovers precariously, oblivious to its function. Ren varies in thickness and is marked by unexpected twists, bulges, and detailing on the underside. The design animates the stone and strikes harmonic balances throughout its luminous surface.

Tootsie is a constellation distinguished by interlocking marble tile units that are adaptable to endless possibilities upon aggregation. Each unit is comprised of four distinct tiles defined by varying gradients of grey. In this particular example, the marble is no longer a static, fixed, or permanent material installation; instead, it takes on soft and pliant characteristics typical of traditional woven rugs. As if displaced from a previous setting, it is a nomadic floor mosaic capable of constant re-installation.

Concrete experiences based on abstract concepts
A creation using concrete in various planimetrical surface and books with concrete history. The absence of the books, due to their various dimensions, form different shapes of various depths and heights. The result concrete structure will not have a final shape, because, by using it, visitors can change the books or remove them.

The politically outdated books have been donated by the Research Institute of Radio Free Europe, the once active radio channel, sponsored by the US that fought against the Communism before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The table constitutes a monument to eternal knowledge - set in concrete- and a monument to the degeneration of information, to the immortality of the past and to its disintegration, while also offering an opportunity to reflect on the essence of the book.

The aesthetic reaction is not generated by the composition, rather than the abstraction of the artwork. Our aim here is not to show the technical virtuosity, the perfection of the design but the conscious use of the technology, with all of its poorly, rigid potentialities. The control over the material is obligate on a certain level, but not the intention.
Inspirations of the material are in the focus of fine artist János Hübler’s compositions, and IVANKA’s entire work.

Hidden Heroes 2010 will host an homage exhibition to Oscar Niemeyer and his most famous creation, Brasilia, city of concrete. IVANKA, a Hidden Heroes exhibitor in 2010 got the honour to present Hubler table togehter with the portrait of the architect - a living legend, pioneer in exploring the formal possibilities of reinforced concrete solely for their aesthetic impact. His stunning work blankets the cities of Brazil. Niemeyer has just turned 102 and Brasilia will celebrate its 50th anniversary on the 21st of April 2010. IVANKA Studio and Concrete Company - founded in 2004 by András Ivanka and Katalin Ivanka - have just made its debut last year’s Milan Design Week 2009SaloneSatellite event with SEEYOU Gravestone.

Niemeyer is a committed communist, ‘one of the last Communists’ on this planet. Ivankas are dreamers and doers living in the fabulous city of Budapest in the middle of Central Europe, where the 20-year transition since the end of communism has just come to an end with a fundamental crisis. The model that they saw being implemented in the 1990s and 2000s is finished. The fragile new democracy’s now facing a most serious paradigm shift. After all across the region there is no nostalgia for the bad old days on the wrong side of the iron curtain.
Through their creative expressions with concrete, an affinity for material and a search for new technological solutions, the exhibit thus links these artists of different fields and generations who are representing totally different political, economic and cultural state.
Their works speak volumes about their countries of origin, and also about their approaches to design.

Created by Australian designer (now based in San Francisco) John Van Den Nieuwenhuizen, the Hidden Radio attempts to be silent both visually and functionally by having the cap in the downward position. By lifting up the cap the user proportionally increases the volume. The further the cap goes up the louder the sound gets. To tune the radio you simply rotate the cap and receive feedback of tuning quality via the LED on the front. The product also offers and audio in jack to allow the user to connect their ipod or MP3 player.

This product burst onto the internet as a concept exploration, the demand from the public was so intense we knew we needed to bring the product to production. It has been featured in numerous design journals and on over 200 blogs with some describiing it as “...maybe the most intuitive product ever...”

The Lifting Body Carbon Fibre stool is the second in b+k’s carbon fibre group. A fusion of aeronautics and furniture design, the stool explores the sculptural and lightweight properties of the material, and references inspiration in the flight industry and futuristic furniture (from as early as the 1940’s)

The range is currently composed of four pieces (but is expanding to six as we speak). The Wingback 2010 is the most recent in the group, taking inspiration from the forward thinking early Danish wingback chairs and the iconic 50s + 60s chairs of Australian designer Grant Featherston .

In addition to their work as designers Blakebrough is a flight artist/King a film-maker – the Winged Self documents the first test flights of Blakebrough’s VTOL flying platform.

One look at this bookcase and you will recognize it as perfectly Moroccan, thanks to its unique shape which is internationally recognizable as zellige -- the terra cotta enamel tiles most commonly used in Moroccan mosaics. The traditional shape provides plenty of surfaces that can be used functionally as shelves. Meanwhile, its industrial design offers a simplified assembly process that helps save space when transporting or storing the bookcase.

Hidden Heroes 2010 will host an homage exhibition to Oscar Niemeyer and his most famous creation, Brasilia, city of concrete. IVANKA, a Hidden Heroes exhibitor in 2010 got the honour to present Hubler table togehter with the portrait of the architect - a living legend, pioneer in exploring the formal possibilities of reinforced concrete solely for their aesthetic impact. His stunning work blankets the cities of Brazil. Niemeyer has just turned 102 and Brasilia will celebrate its 50th anniversary on the 21st of April 2010. IVANKA Studio and Concrete Company - founded in 2004 by András Ivanka and Katalin Ivanka - have just made its debut last year’s Milan Design Week 2009SaloneSatellite event with SEEYOU Gravestone.

Niemeyer is a committed communist, ‘one of the last Communists’ on this planet. Ivankas are dreamers and doers living in the fabulous city of Budapest in the middle of Central Europe, where the 20-year transition since the end of communism has just come to an end with a fundamental crisis. The model that they saw being implemented in the 1990s and 2000s is finished. The fragile new democracy’s now facing a most serious paradigm shift. After all across the region there is no nostalgia for the bad old days on the wrong side of the iron curtain.

Through their creative expressions with concrete, an affinity for material and a search for new technological solutions, the exhibit thus links these artists of different fields and generations who are representing totally different political, economic and cultural state.

Their works speak volumes about their countries of origin, and also about their approaches to design.

Hidden Heroes At Salone Del Mobile

Hidden Heroes will be showing a range of work from emerging creatives, eager to present their work within a collective of other young designers at this years Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The Hidden Heroes exhibition at the Salone del Mobile will include a selection of individuals from across the globe, highlighting the designers' different backgrounds and techniques.

The scope of work spans still images to furniture; fashion photography images by Australia’s Elli Ioannou are juxtaposed with the solid marble furniture pieces of Ifeanyi Oganwu. Emma Elizabeth’s sliZed follows the idea that the technique of slicing is an art form, while Mermelada Estudio will display stools with a slight edge.

Named after Pinocchio’s carver, Danny Fang’s Geppetto Chair is made from one piece of plastic that has been produced with gas-assisted injection moulding, and the Bildi teapot by Younes adopts the design of a traditional Moroccan kettle while incorporating the industrial technique of extrusion to create volume.

Visitors will find the exhibition at T35/ Nhow Hotel - Via Tortona 35, Milan from 14th -19th April, 2010.

Last year we celebrated the 200 year anniversary of Charles Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution, who stated that, in the course of time, not the strongest would survive, but the most adaptable. Humans are constantly evolving, even though our arrogance leads us to believe we are the final product. Did this thought ever occur to you? I have always wondered how we would look like in a couple of million, or billion years. To make this constant evolution easier, Mother Nature has created a few improved human beings with the capability of transforming objects into extensions of our bodies, and vice-versa.

Exactly one year ago, I was wondering in the streets of Milan with a somber face. I had moved to the city less than a year before to work as a designer agent, someone who would find projects and connect designers with companies. Everything sounded like a pink dream, except that I arrived with a backpack and not one contact in Milan, on the edge of probably the worst global economic crisis to the day.

Impulsively, not to say stupidly, I decided to rent a space for a show during the Salone del Mobile 2009. I wanted to give designers the opportunity to show their work even in a year when big companies were playing safe and going for big star designers. The challenge was that I had no design to show, no concept, no idea, no money. I had to think and focus on what the public and designers longed during that passionate week. With thousands of companies and designers fighting for spaces and attention, what else could I offer? How could I, if only for a week, be the designer of a great show and touch the hearts of our visitors and inspire a young generation of designers?

The answer was simple: Hope materialized as exhibition. International designers flew in from all corners of the globe, great art shared the space with great design, and visitors bought products from the show and learned with designers via workshops and design talks. So I transformed a basement at Superstudio into a human power plant, seven days of incredible adaptation, integration, but most of all, solidarity among designers and a strong connection with the visitors. Everyone took responsibility, not only for their product, but for the entire show. Darwin was giving us a kick: we became a giant machine in which all parts were working together, focused on making the best with what we had, readapting and transforming the show everyday. We didn’t have a dirty, poorly ventilated basement, prototypes that probably would never get into production and comments that were not always kind. We had a super energized space where people believed on what they were showing, and with that, if only for a moment, transported the visitor to a magical, chaotic land where everything was possible.

Whatever form, shape, or state of liquidity we reach in a million years, surely the transformations in our physical structure and society will be made easier thanks to the work of great industrial designers. Hats that capture solar power and charge your phones and computers; body extensions that allow us to reach farther and scratch that itch; a brain filter that will help us cut off unnecessary information.

With all that said, I would dare to add one element to Darwin’s theory: hope. Hope that we all take risks, break rules, become the mavericks we once thought we were in our childhood, when everything was possible. Without hope we might as well push the red button.

I call my designers Hidden Heroes: The Mavericks of the Future, and invite you to share this extraordinary gift with us again in 2010.

David Carson: (Hidden) Hero of the week.

A month before the Salone starts, so I have decided to update my blog....

Being a Brazilian, therefore one of 200 million superstitious happy people, I have decided to start blogging with the right foot. Literally. In Brazil, before stepping on the beach, we make sure we do so with our right foot, in order to have a safe and enjoyable day in the sun. It is a conscious step.

And who better than David Carson, professional surfer turned sociologist, turned graphic designer, turned innovative magazine designer, turned art director, and all other definitions one can find by Googling David, to be my sunshine, if only for 5 minutes?

Bombay Sapphire held its 20th Inspirational Design Happening event in Padua this weekend. David was the speaker, vigorously flipping his slides with incredible images and amazing stories, connecting visual communication with emotional response.

After the presentation, journalists had some time with him. I am a political scientist, turned account manager, turned designer agent, turned weekend freelance writer (ok, nothing as exciting as David’s qualification as the 9th best surfer in the world, but bear with me) and my editor wasn’t very interested on my suggestion on an article on this event. So I just sat and thought: what can I ask him that nobody else will? ‘What inspires you? - How old were you when you first realized that you wanted to redesign the world of typography? - What is next? – What would you say to young graphic designers? – What is your favorite food?’.

Puff… As I saw all other journalists spending precious 20 minutes with David, I started to feel like a party crasher, someone who came along for the free cocktail.

Then it was my turn.

I walked to him as a cow walks to the slaughter house. I managed to steal a Frame magazine copy from the studio the event was being held at, in order to give me some credibility. ‘He will think I am a joke’.

So that is how it went, more or less, since I didn’t have a recorder with me:

‘FV: Hi David, My name is Fabiana and I am a freelance writer for Frame and Elephant magazines.

DC: Hi.

FV: David, why were you late?

DC: What do you mean?

FV: We had to wait for over 1 hour for you. I saw you working on your computer…

DC: Oh yeah. Well, one of those days. I decided to finish my presentation on the plane but my computer ran out of battery so I couldn’t finish it. I am not very good with technology. And everyone here who tried to help me finish the presentation actually knew less than I do about PowerPoint. It was a mess.

FV: On your TED presentation you showed an image of Hitler’s 1932 election poster. You spoke about how powerful an image can be. No written message, just a swastika and Adolf Hitler’s name. For sure that is a powerful message now, for the wrong reasons, and I am not sure what sort of message this visual stimulation was able to deliver at the time, but have you ever checked out the poster from the other candidates at the time?

DC: Very good question… no, I haven’t. Would be interesting to have them all to check out how politicians were communicating at the time. We know Hitler had a good propaganda strategy and his posters were always very impressive.

What we can say for now is that, apparently with some reluctance, Obama has understood the power of simple, clear images. And it has made him score.

FV: Why do you have two watches?

DC: Why not?

FV: Thanks David. I won’t take more of your time. You will have now a real journalist wth you, from Rolling Stone magazine.

DC: Stick around.’

So, it wasn’t so bad, and the Hitler question was pretty agitating I thought.

I got home and went straight to my computer to look for images of pre and post 1931 German election posters. Quite an interesting subject, but should be left for the specialists to debate. Then for more interesting, uplifting material, I spent a couple of hours reading about David’s achievements and his work.

Living in Milan, a city where everyone is fighting for their 15 seconds of fame, for getting that rich husband, or the next outlet sales of famous brand they can’t afford, so they can get the rich husband, it was an honor to meet someone so down to Earth, friendly, and yet so influential. Last time I met someone like that was Elio Fiorucci, another extraordinary human being who I am lucky enough to have as a friend. Fiorucci is the proud father of two little angels with sunglasses, the precursor of Brazilian bikinis, and tight, very tight jeans. He has changed fashion, and David has changed graphics.

David is one of those heroes who changed the world without having to point a gun at anyone’s head. Think about it: how many images are you bombarded with each day? And now, how dear can you think about David, realizing that he has actually improved your quality of life by teaching the world how to deliver better messages through simpler images? See my point? I’ll drink to that!

So this is the first step to our Salone exhibition, an inspirational talk with a surfer.
